What Are PVC Wiring Ducts?
The wiring ducts discussed in this article mainly refer to ducts used for internal wiring inside electrical control cabinets.
They do not include wiring ducts used for building decoration or metal cable trunking used in cable tray systems.
Wiring ducts are also called wire ducts or cable ducts. The professional term is “wiring duct.” They are generally made of PVC plastic and feature electrical insulation and flame-retardant properties.
The purpose of using wiring ducts is to make control cabinet wiring easier and more organized, improve the overall appearance of the cabinet, and provide both mechanical protection and electrical protection for conductors.
Why Did PVC Wiring Ducts Change Control Cabinet Wiring Methods?
The appearance of wiring ducts brought major changes to control cabinet wiring.
Before wiring ducts were introduced, electrical components were mounted directly on the panel by drilling holes, and hard wires were commonly used. At that time, the skill of a wiring technician was truly tested: each hard wire had to be bent precisely, with horizontal and vertical routing. There were no PLCs back then—most systems relied on relay logic control, with complex and dense wiring. Without sufficient skill, the finished control panel would look extremely messy.
After wiring ducts became widely used, hard-wire routing gradually disappeared. Multi-core flexible wires are now commonly used. There is no need to carefully shape wires anymore—just route them into the wiring ducts. Once all wiring is completed, simply snap the duct covers on. This method is fast, convenient, and allows even less-experienced technicians to build clean and professional-looking control cabinets.
Common Types of Wiring Ducts
The most common types include slotted (open-type) wiring ducts and closed-type wiring ducts.
Slotted wiring ducts are more convenient for wiring, as conductors can be easily inserted or removed.
Closed wiring ducts are slightly more difficult during wiring because cables must be threaded through holes. However, when there are many wires, installing the cover is easier, since the wires are restrained by the openings and won’t spring out.

How to Evaluate Wiring Duct Quality?
When selecting a good-quality wiring duct, you can evaluate it using the following methods:
Repeatedly bend the duct fingers by hand—if they do not break easily, the material quality is better.
Check whether the duct is straight and whether the fingers are evenly aligned.
Ensure the duct cover fits tightly and securely after installation.
Inspect both the inside and outside surfaces for burrs or sharp edges.
